Chapter Eight

For the first time in their history, with its tragic, only recently bridged gap, they would spend the night together. Nestled in Danny’s arms between nut-brown sheets under a masculine-looking coverlet that smelled faintly of his aftershave, Cate dozed a little. Just to nestle there, luxuriating in his body warmth and deep masculine tenderness, was like heaven to her. For the moment, she thought with a little twist of irony, it’s within my grasp. It occurred to her that it might not always be. Seconds later she refused to entertain defeatist notions. Maybe a way could be found for them to build a life together. At the thought, her contentment deepened, merging with the first tentative fragments of a dream as sleep claimed her.

Unwilling to waste a single, precious moment of their time together, Danny held her as her breathing softened, became more regular. Gratified by their closeness, he couldn’t stop wondering about what the future held for them. Or how he could position himself to keep her. Splendid as it was for them to be lovers again and share a bed, he wanted more. A lot more—nothing less than permanent commitment and a life together. He wasn’t sure, yet, how to go about getting them.

To date, he and Cate hadn’t discussed anything of the sort. He was half-afraid to broach the subject. In addition to Brian’s likely skittishness about accepting a new man as a permanent fixture in his mother’s life, he knew, he’d have to deal with her devotion to her in-laws. And their attachment to her. Not to mention the Andersons’ deep love for their grandson. The bond that united Cate, her son and Larry’s parents had been an almost palpable thing as he’d chatted with them after the church service the previous Sunday. He doubted Beverly and Russ Anderson would thank him for carrying off their devoted daughter-in-law and beloved grandson to northern California. Or that Brian would be eager to leave friends and family behind, transfer to a different high school.

Though her parents didn’t deserve it, Cate wouldn’t be Cate if she didn’t feel some concern for them, too, he supposed.

When her eyes fluttered open again, Cate found the man she loved gazing thoughtfully at her. His dark hair was rumpled, his forehead slightly furrowed as if he’d been having a serious discussion with himself. According to the clock radio he’d brought with him from Chicago to serve as his weekday alarm, only forty-five minutes had elapsed.

“Danny…what is it?” she asked, vaguely troubled by his expression.

It’s now or never, he thought. We need to brush back the cobwebs. Face facts about what happened to separate us. And go on from there. It’s the nagging but unasked and unanswered questions that can torpedo a relationship—erode trust more surely than dealing with the most difficult truth.

Aware how unsettled things still were with them, he knew she might draw back from him if he put his questions into words. Yet at some point he had to ask
